The Most Popular Types of Fishing in Canada

So you want to go fishing eh? We’ve got some types for you to explore!

There are many types of fishing available to you across Canada. Although the foundation of fishing remains the same across each type, there are specific attributes that can make each style of fishing unique and a new experience!

Canada is filled with beautiful coasts, large-body lakes, and small-body lakes for you to explore, enjoy, and, best of all, fish! From the ocean coasts to private fishing clubs like The Franklin Club, there is no shortage of ways to fish.

Fly fishing

fish caught by fly fisherOne of our favourite types of fishing is fly fishing! Fly fishing is essentially imitating the act of a fly by casting a line in a specific way. The goal is to get the fish to bite them as they are suspended on or just below the water like a real insect. You may need to purchase a different rod for fly fishing as it does require a heavier line to achieve the correct angling.

Fly fishing is often done in warm waters such as ponds and lakes – like the one we’ve got right here! You can also catch some of our pros, and members fly fishing out at the club.

Freshwater fishing

Lucky for you, there is a plethora of freshwater across Canada. Freshwater fishing can be done in various ways, including from shore, on a boat, a bridge, or docks. That being said, every freshwater is different in terms of depth, type of fish, temperature, etc.

Ice Fishing

Canada is a great place to do some ice fishing due to our cold climate. Not to mention, it is an excellent winter activity to get you back outside. Ice fishing is essentially creating an opening in ice that is over a frozen body of water. This can usually be done on lakes!

To create an opening, you’ll require a manual or gas-powered auger to drill your fishing hole. Ice fishing can be tricky. After all, you are on a frozen body of water. It is important to ensure the ice is thick enough for your safety.

When you go ice fishing, you will want to ensure you are wearing the appropriate boots to walk along the ice, an ice spud to check the thickness of the ice, a life vest, warm clothing, and consider taking a whistle in case of an emergency.

Ice fishing can be done safely here at The Franklin Club!

Canoe fishing

If you want to go further to the middle of a lake, then canoe fishing is for you! Although this method of fishing can also be done in other ways, including a paddleboard or a boat – the canoe is a classic. How often do you see a Canadian with a canoe strapped to the top of their vehicle? Canoe fishing is easily transportable and definitely one of the more serene methods of fishing.

Canoe fishing can be done on rivers, streams, saltwater, freshwater, and of course, lakes. Depending on which type of body of water you take your canoe to, keep a lookout for currents and ensure you have a route planned out. And never forget the safety equipment, including a life vest, an extra paddle, and consider taking a whistle.

Shore fishing

Shoreline fishing is the final type of fishing we wanted to include. It is a great fishing style for beginners and can be done anywhere from the banks of rivers to lakeshores. Shore fishing also allows you to be with more people like your family and friends.

Shoreline spots that are further away from crowds and noisier points are often more productive and filled with fish. These spots are best recommended to increase your chances of catching fish. And a helpful tip is to cast along the shoreline as opposed to far into the body of water. This is typically where you’ll find your fish.
