Choosing Your Perfect Fishing Rod

What you need to know before buying a fishing rod

A fishing rod is an investment in your fishing journey. Fishing rods can have a lot of different attributes that all play a part in your success out at the lake. From the weight and speed to the material it is made out of, it can be overwhelming selecting which fishing rod to get. You’re in luck!

We have outlined what you need to know before making your fishing rod purchase.

What is the best fishing rod length?

Rod length is determined from the end of the rod’s handle to the end of the rod’s tip and can range from as low as four feet to as high as 14 feet! You may be wondering, which length is right for me? Depending on the type of fishing you intend on doing – generally shorter rods are better for short distances and longer rods are effective for casting longer distances.

With a short rod, you can cast at a shorter distance and involve less bending and pulling to retract the fish. This means it is easier to catch larger fish with a shorter rod. On the flip side, a longer rod will allow you to cover a greater portion of water.

For beginners, a good average rod length to start with would be within 7 to 9 feet. However, it is important to keep in mind the type of fish you are aiming to catch. This will help you narrow down where these fish typically stay in the water and what type of rod can reach them best!

The amount of weight or power your fishing rod is capable of

The weight of your fishing rod refers to the level of resistance to bending. A lighter rod is more susceptible to bending than a heavier rod. You may be wondering, why would I want a bendier or sturdier rod? This will depend on the type of fish you plan on catching. The heavier the pole, the heavier fish you can catch!

Another important tip to remember is the weight of your rod will usually be marked on the rod handle. You want to make sure to match all your rod equipment with this weight. This includes the fishing rod line, lure, and reel.

The material your fishing rod is made out of

Fishing rods are commonly made out of either graphite, fibreglass, or a combination of the two. Fibreglass is a flexible and heavy material, allowing the rod to bend significantly more. Depending on your choice of rod weight, fibreglass is commonly used for lighter weight/action. Graphite rods, although varying in their stiffness, are less bendable and are often used to catch stronger fish.

Or you can get a combination of both! Take a look at what type of fishing interests you the most and how much power you will require from your rod.

Do I choose a slow action, medium action, or fast action rod?

A rod’s action is essentially wherein the rod bends when pressure is put at the tip. There are commonly three levels of rod action – slow, medium and fast. Fast action rods bend closest to the tip while slow action rods bend closer to the handle.

Fast action is commonly more popular due to the sensitivity it provides when feeling for bites in the water. It is often recommended for beginners. Medium action removes some of the sensitivity but allows for greater casting distances. This can help achieve capturing larger fish. Lastly, a slow action rod is ideal for casting small lures to launch with a lighter fish line.

How many pieces should your rod come in?

When purchasing a fishing rod, you may also have options between how many pieces your rod comes in. This allows you to dismantle your rod, making travelling a lot easier. However, it is important to keep in mind that the more pieces you can detach your rod in will increase its sensitivity.

Depending on your fishing lifestyle, if you want a rod that is easy to commute with then you may want to consider a rod that comes in many pieces.
