Fly Tying at The Franklin Club

The History of The Franklin Club Fly Tying Group

Started in 1992 by long time member Jim Purcell, The Franklin Club’s Fly Tying Group has grown into an invaluable resource for both beginners and experienced fly tyers. What began as a shared interest among members has become a rewarding part of the Club experience, bringing people together to learn, create, and better understand the art behind successful fly fishing.

Fly tying is more than preparing flies for a day on the water. It is a hands on craft that connects anglers more closely to the insects, baitfish, colours, materials, and movements that attract trout. There is a special satisfaction in catching a fish on a fly you tied yourself, knowing the pattern, proportions, and presentation all came together through your own skill and patience.

Currently led by Franklin Club member Gary Baldackin, who has guided the group since 2005, the Fly Tying Group offers alternating sessions every other week. With both Beginner and Advanced classes available, members can build confidence at their own pace, refine their techniques, and enjoy the camaraderie that comes from learning alongside fellow anglers.

Fly Tying Sessions at The Franklin Club

The Franklin Club Fly Tying Group welcomes new members to join our bi monthly, two hour sessions in a relaxed and social setting. A small nominal fee helps offset the cost of materials and equipment, making it easy for members to take part and build confidence at the tying bench.

Many members arrive early to enjoy a meal together in the dining room, prepared by our head chef, before each session begins. It is a great opportunity to connect with fellow anglers, share stories, and enjoy the camaraderie of the group.

Sessions are led by experienced Club members and often include special guest tyers, educators, and fly fishing organizations who bring added knowledge and fresh perspective. Each session focuses on proven fly patterns for rainbow, brown, and brook trout, along with practical techniques to improve tying skills and presentation on the water.
